Answer™ - Replacing the Swing-Bolt Lock
Overview: This Guide will explain how to replace the swing-bolt lock in the Answer™ line of safes. Note: this guide can be used on either the Model 8 or 12 on the main door (with the handle).
Tools Needed: The following tools are required to complete this task (not included):
- Phillips-Head Screwdriver (recommend using hand tools rather than drill to avoid stripping screws)
- Needle-nose pliers (optional)
Step 1: Remove the Panel on the Main Door
a. Open the safe and identify the 12 screw caps on the main door
b. Use your fingernail or another thin object to GENTLY pop open the caps for each of the 12 caps
c. Unscrew all screws and set aside with caps in a safe place
Note: Screws are holding the back-door panel in place; we recommend taking off the very top-middle screw last to keep from dropping the heavy door panel
Step 2: Unlock The Door
With the cover removed, verify that the lock is in the “open” position; the main metal plate should be slid all the way to the LEFT and bolts should be IN
Step 3: Remove the Anti-theft Bracket
a. Locate and remove the two screws holding on the silver anti-theft bolt-drop bracket. - Set aside in a safe place
b. Pull up on the lock-bolt and slide the bracket out - place in safe place with screws
Step 4: Unplug the Cable
a. Carefully remove the 4-wire cable by clasping the small clip on the back side and pulling straight up. (if not able to grip, use needle-nose pliers) DO NOT break prongs or cut wire.
b. Tuck wire behind the top rail for safe-keeping.
Note: Do not pull on wire or try to move it until the lock is removed.
Step 5: Remove the Old Lock
a. Locate and remove the three main screws on the lock that are bolting it to the safe.
b. Remove the lock, leaving the wire in place.
Step 6: Install the New Lock
In order to install the new lock, you will need to turn the handle on the safe to the “locked” position (the main metal plate should be slid all the way to the RIGHT and bolts should be OUT)
a. The flat side of the bolt should be facing to the right (as shown) and it should slip right into the rectangular space provided
b. Reattach the three main screws to bolt the lock to the safe wall.
Note: Be sure the wire is still flat and facing upward while installing so it does not get damaged.
Step 7: Reattach the Anti-theft Bracket
a. Pull the bolt up and slide the bracket into place, then release the bolt.
b. Attach the two screws for the bracket and ensure the bracket is level.
Step 8: Test, Reattach the Back-door Panel and Wrap-up.
a. Once fully installed, test the lock before closing the door
- If the lock tests well and is working as designed – reinstall the door panel using the 12 screws and caps
- If the test fails – leave the door panel off and Contact Support
